How the paintball
changed
From permanent oil enamel sealed in a livestock medicine capsule to a food-grade, water-soluble, biodegradable projectile — a fifty-year materials problem.
Almost everything about modern paintball follows from a single design constraint: the projectile must break reliably on a human being without hurting them, leave an unmistakable mark, and then wash away. Every generation of the paintball has been an attempt to balance those three demands against each other.
The marking pellet
The first paintballs were not sporting equipment and were never meant to touch a person. Charles Nelson's pellet was a soft gelatin capsule — the same kind used to dose horses and livestock with medicine — filled with oil-based marking enamel.
Every property of that pellet was tuned for the job of marking a tree or an animal: permanent, high-visibility, weather-resistant. It was also, by modern standards, a rough object. Shell consistency varied. Roundness varied. Some early accounts describe glass containers in the earliest experimental work before gelatin encapsulation was settled on.
The oil-based problem
When the first players took Nel-Spot markers into the woods in 1981, they were shooting each other with paint designed never to come off. It stained clothing permanently and had to be cleaned from skin with solvent. Early players wore old clothes they were prepared to throw away. Solving this was the first real product problem the young sport faced.
Washable paint and the sporting ball
Through the 1980s, manufacturers reformulated the fill away from oil-based enamel toward water-soluble paints that would come out of clothing in a normal wash. This was not a minor tweak — it was the change that made paintball viable as a commercial recreation. A field cannot sell an afternoon of fun that also destroys the customer's clothes.
At the same time, the ball itself began to be engineered rather than merely produced. Consistency of shell thickness, sphericity, and fill viscosity started to matter, because the markers were getting faster and the players more demanding.

What a modern paintball actually is
A contemporary paintball is a spherical gelatin capsule — chemically a close relative of a pharmaceutical soft-gel — containing a fill built primarily around polyethylene glycol (PEG) together with other non-toxic, water-soluble substances and dye. All the ingredients are food-grade quality. A .68 caliber ball is roughly 17 mm across and weighs about three grams filled.
Quality is judged on three things, and they pull against each other:
Shell brittleness
The shell must be thin enough to break reliably on impact with a person, but tough enough to survive the acceleration of being fired and the tumbling inside a hopper. Too brittle and it breaks in the barrel; too tough and hits bounce.
Roundness
Accuracy is a function of sphericity. A high-grade tournament ball is very nearly a perfect sphere; a cheap or heat-warped one flies unpredictably regardless of how good the marker is.
Fill quality
The fill needs to be thick and brightly pigmented so a hit is obvious and cannot be quietly wiped away — the practical foundation of honest self-calling.
Why paintballs go bad
Gelatin is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air. Paintballs stored in humidity soften and swell; stored in heat they warp out of round; stored cold and then warmed they can sweat. A case left in a car boot over a hot weekend can be effectively ruined. Fields store paint in climate-controlled rooms for exactly this reason, and rotating a case occasionally keeps the balls from developing flat spots.
Caliber: .68 and .50
The sport inherited .68 caliber (about 17 mm) directly from the forestry marking pellet, and it remains the standard. It is large enough to carry a substantial payload of paint and to break dependably, and heavy enough at roughly three grams to hold a reasonable trajectory.
.50 caliber (about 13 mm) emerged much later as a deliberately lower-impact format. A smaller, lighter ball carries less energy to the target, which makes it well suited to younger players, corporate and casual events, and low-impact recreational programmes. It uses its own markers and hoppers — the two calibers are not interchangeable.
Shaped projectiles
A more recent development departs from the sphere entirely. Shaped, finned projectiles — the best-known being First Strike — are fed from spring-loaded magazines rather than gravity hoppers and are stabilised by a rifled barrel. The higher ballistic coefficient and gyroscopic spin give a substantial gain in range and accuracy, at a substantially higher cost per shot. They are common in milsim and scenario play and generally restricted or banned in tournament formats.
Biodegradable by design
Almost all paintballs in use today are biodegradable. The shell is gelatin; the fill is water-soluble and made of food-grade ingredients. Under normal outdoor conditions, unbroken balls left on a field break down and are reabsorbed, and broken paint washes away in rain.
The industry's broader shift has been away from the two things it inherited from its industrial origins: oil-based paint, replaced by water-based formulations, and CO₂ propellant, increasingly replaced by compressed air. Both changes were driven partly by performance and partly by environmental pressure, and both moved the sport further from the forestry tool it started as.
There is a pleasing symmetry in where the technology ended up. Nelson Paint still makes oil-based marking paintballs for forestry, livestock, and wildlife work — the original product, still doing the original job — alongside the sporting paintballs the game runs on. Both descend from the same capsule.
